Pierre Gerges, Luxemburger Wort, 05/09/11

"Mr. Monin’s performance of this beloved Mendelssohn music was pure delight. Not only was it crisply played; it also breathed a really orchestral spirit and the performer was able to evoke unfamiliar but apt sounds from his instrument — he knew exactly what he was doing with this enormous Skinner-Möller organ. Moreover he entered into the spirit of the music, and so was able masterfully to elicit the “worlds,” — whether archly ineffable or crassly quotidian — arising from this imaginative work of a youthful genius. (...) Mr. Monin’s performance of it was in any case a revelation. (...) Getting with the rebel spirit, Mr. Monin even found a way to incorporate an extremely non-Gallic Harp stop into this piece (just as he had tinged the last of the introductory chords (E-B-Am-E) of the Mendelssohn with the sounds of les Tubes de Cloches) ! (...) I am grateful to Virgile Monin, who, by virtue of his vigorous yet poetic performance of this murderously difficult music, has (re-) kindled my appreciation of it. Bon travail!"
